Dedicated Australians Restore an Aviation IconDec 10, 2011
Now on to Australia, where an extensive project is underway to restore one of the country's most significant wartime airplanes. It's a prime example of dedication, perseverance and patriotism. Our Australian correspondent John Dowie caught up with the individuals who are driving the project forward. Here in country Australia a dedicated group of enthusiasts are on a special mission. They're piecing together one of Australia's most significant World War II planes, the Bristol Beaufort Bomber. [Ralph Cusack, Project Co-ordinator: Beaufort Restoration Group]: "It will honor the people who have lost their lives, and honor the people who worked on it in the factory. Not honoring war per se, but honoring what we have done in Australia." The Beaufort marked a milestone in the Australian Aviation Industry. Prior to WWII, Britain supplied most of Australia's military aircraft. But amidst the battle in WWII, the supply lines were cut by the Japanese. The urgent need for military aircraft forced the pivotal decision to build 700 of these Bombers in Australia. [John Lemcke, WWII Beaufort Pilot]:" The Southeast Pacific war I think, has a lot to thank the Beaufort for ... It's the only time Australia's been threatened on our own shores, and in my opinion without the 700 Beaufort's we could be Japanese." Ralph Cusack is the man responsible for initiating the restoration, he bought the plane damaged in 1982, the idea of having it fly once again has become his life's driving force. [Ralph ...

Shark Patrol - Aviation Students - University of South AustraliaFeb 20, 2012
UniSA's Civil Aviation students are the eyes in the sky protecting metropolitan beach-goers from sharks this summer, as part of the annual shark patrol program run in partnership with the State Emergency Services (SES). The UniSA shark patrols fly four times daily on weekdays from late November to April between 11am and 8pm, with the Westpac lifesaving helicopter taking over patrol duties on the weekend. The UniSA crews fly Cessna 172S's from Parafield to Outer Harbour and down to Sellicks Beach and then from Parafield to Outer Harbour and Rapid Bay each morning, before refuelling and heading out again to complete the same two loops in the afternoon. The patrol is a great opportunity for students with their commercial licence to build up their flying hours and give them an edge when looking for that elusive first job.
